Magic Heist by Mary Karlik

Magic Heist
Mary Karlik
(Fairy Trafficking #2)
Published by: Ink Monster LLC
Publication date: July 9th 2019
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Layla rescued fairies that had been kidnapped and brought the human world. But now they can’t find their way back to the magic realm and time is running out.
Layla is a powerful fairy with magical ability that stretches beyond throwing spells. But with all that power, she still doesn’t know how to get over one-hundred fairies back to the magic realm. With their magic gone, the rescued fairies have no immunity to protect them from the toxins of the human world, and they’re slowly dying.
To find the path home, Layla knows she must team up with the one man who can make her insides quiver with an accidental brush of his fingertips. The same man who’s alter ego dragon is the natural predator of fairies. The man she knows will give his life to keep the fairies safe—Scotland’s finest Specialist Crime Division leader, Ian Cameron.
Ian has only been a dragon shifter for a few days. He struggles to control the dragon spirit locked inside his human form, doesn’t know what magical powers he may or may not have, and has never been to a magical world. But none of those things frighten him as much as the little spark that ignites in his soul when the half – human fairy is around.
But this little fairy is no Tinkerbell. She is brave, powerful, and can wield a sword like a medieval knight.
With growing feelings toward Layla, he couldn’t refuse to help her get the fairies back to the magic realm if he wanted to. The problem is the dragon who lives inside him would like nothing more than to feed his appetite with all of those little fairies—especially the half human one who killed its leader.
“Mary Karlik, is truly a hidden gem of a writer.”I Am the Bookworm

Excerpt:

Layla nodded and jogged up the trail. She thought about fairy-shifting. But the wind had picked up, making it unsafe to fly. Instead, she ignored the tourists’ stares and used her wings to help propel her up the path.
“Layla, go back.”
She had been sure Ian was ahead of them, but his voice came from behind. She stopped and turned. Ian ran to her. “Go back. It’s not safe.”
“What’s not safe? What are you not telling me?”
He opened his mouth to speak, and a black forked tongue darted out. He pulled it back in and clamped his lips shut. Every muscle in his face tensed, and his neck bulged as if he were swallowing the thing down. “Please. Stay. Away.” The words came out choppy as if he’d pushed them from his gut, past the dragon, and forced them between his lips.
“Let me help you.” Her heart pounded, and fear flowed up her spine. Was he turning dragon from the inside out? Would he shed his human skin like Miranda had? No. She wouldn’t let him lose this battle.
Dark clouds covered the sun. He raised his eyes to the sky. “It’s too late.” He ran toward the summit of the crag.
Layla sprinted after him. His back twitched, and she was sure his scales were glowing. If the dragon-spirit forced a shift, then Ian wouldn’t have control. It wouldn’t be just the fairies who were at risk. They were all in danger.
She had to help him. She had to stop him.
Her heart pounded as she ran up the steep incline, and her chest burned. She tried to gulp deep breaths, but lung-seizing, throat-tightening fear refused to allow air in. She was reduced to a stumbling, gasping walk as she made her way to the crest of the crag.
“The dragon does not control you!” she screamed at his back. But the wind scattered her words, and she wasn’t sure he’d heard her.
He turned to face her in a rigid, unnatural movement. “Back away.” His pupils had elongated into slits, and his muscles twitched.
Layla ran to him and took his face in her hands. “Think about the painting.”
He jerked away from her and looked up at the sky. “It’s coming.”
She raised her gaze, too, and the fear that had a hold on her system turned into terror.
Dark clouds swirled above the crest of Arthur’s Seat, and an eerie silence permeated the air. Energy crackled across her skin, but it wasn’t her magic. This was something different, dark, and dangerous.
“Layla, get out of here.” The tone in Ian’s voice went from tense to frantic and dragged her pulse along with it.
Lightning cracked. And from the center of the swirling black clouds, fire shot across the sky.
Behind the fire was a red dragon.

Author Bio:
Mary Karlik has always been a dreamer. When she was a teen, she read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and then sat in every wardrobe in her Nanna's home, trying to open the door to Narnia. She didn't find it, but she did discover her voice as an author: one filled with her young adult self, and grounded in her roots as a Texan and her Scottish heritage, nourished by obscure Scottish folklore.

You can find her Texas roots in her YA contemporary romance Hickville series , which has been described as "100% solid storytelling," and begins with Welcome to Hickville High, a "lovely story about growing up."

She digs deep into her Scottish roots - there is magic there, she just knows it - for the forthcoming YA epic fantasy Fairy Trafficking series, beginning with Magic Harvest.

She makes her home in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains of Northern New Mexico where she is a certified professional ski instructor, but she also loves visiting Scotland where she is currently studying Scottish Gaelic at the University of Highlands and Islands in Skye. Mary also earned her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University, has a B.S. degree from Texas A&M University, and is a Registered Nurse.

Mary currently serves as the President of the Young Adult Chapter of Romance Writers of America and looks forward to raising a glass or two of gin and tonic with her fellow writers every year at RWA's national convention.

GENRE: Women’s Fiction, Romantic Suspense

Landscape artist Alexandra Newborn dreams of a one-woman show at the Diamond Gallery. But the gallery owner dismisses her paintings as "old, tired, and dull. Lacking excitement." Those words also describe Alex's unhappy marriage.

Alex's shocking reunion with her college art professor, Dominick "Nick" Anselmo—once a world-celebrated Italian artist, now a homeless lawn man—reignites their passion and fuels a creative spark for both, helping Nick recover from his wife's death.

With Nick's provocative sketches, art imitates life, but Alex doesn't realize they reveal a dangerous liaison between her husband and the gallery owner. Without Nick's knowledge, Alex arranges an art opening that includes his drawings.

When the torrid affair between Alex's husband and his mistress is exposed, the seeds are sown for murder, mystery, and romance.

Read an Excerpt:

The subject matter was unexpected and provocative. She’d thought that, in his new life as a lawn man, Nick might just draw a tree, or a garden, not a couple caught in a passionate embrace—her face against his cheek, his face buried in her neck to hide their identities and keep the world at bay.

He had captured them in a clinch that seemed to portray more lust than love. The sketch spoke of forbidden moments. The lines revealed movement, as if the couple had had to love and leave. All that sexual desire was combustible. And yet there was love there. Maybe not love between this couple, but Nick had obviously transferred his own feelings of lost love and longing onto the paper.

“Always leave something of yourself in your work.” That’s what Professore Anselmo had taught his students in college. And he had managed to do that brilliantly in this drawing. The passion was raw, and it exposed everything that was missing in her relationship with Mark. And everything that was missing in her art. Something vaguely familiar about this couple tugged at her memory, but she quickly dismissed it.

Alex knew great art could have that effect on your soul. It was similar to a writer who paints word pictures that draw you into the story and elevate the everyday into the sublime—word pictures that are often too close to home, too real to examine too closely.

BDSM/AP
lifestyler Breanna Hayse strives to give her readers truth and
reality of the BDSM/Age-Play/Total Power and Erotic Exchange
lifestyle.

Who
am I?
I'm
a native Californian gone 'wild', and had the opportunity to travel
the globe and discover the world through the eyes of both a Marine
Intelligence specialist and a BDSM lifestyler. I left the service to
go into hospice nursing and grief counseling, eventually working as a
marriage and family therapist for those involved in alternative
lifestyle development. This experience has allowed me to gain unique
inspiration for my books and offer realistic plots and relatable
characters.

In
2004, my husband, John, and I joined forces to work with both
submissives and dominants- teaching, training, listening and loving.
Our goal was to take the mystery and fear out of the lifestyle and
mentor people in safe, consensual and healthy relationships.

My
first book, The Game Plan, was published in 2012 and opened the door
to the now-booming world of Age-Play literature. Since that time,
I've devoted my 'spare' time to writing, researching, community
involvement, and private and group pro bono counseling in deviant
behavior, alternative lifestyle, and addiction recovery.

I
was formally 'dungeon trained' as a Domme before discovering my
submissive side when I joined the service. My scenarios are pulled
primarily from either personal experience or observation, including
spending time in BDSM clubs as the safety/medical officer. My
multi-faceted background allows me to glean from many avenues and
give a unique and intelligent literary experience through elements of
fantasy and fiction. I also discuss the questions and psychology of
the lifestyle in a manner that is fun and informative, and based on
'the real deal.'

I
live with my husband, musician, and fellow-author, John Hayse, and
two border collies in southern California. We practice a 24/7 D&S
relationship with speckles of AP (and many trips to Build-A-Bear),
and happily spend every moment together that we can. My hobbies
include my puppies, hiding my vanilla salt-water taffy where John
can't find it, exotic art, collecting inspirational trinkets, and
developing my own paddle line. You can also see me as a featured
author/instructor in professional conference settings and as a

Sasha Marshall
Genre:
New Adult Romance

2016
SIBA HUMOR AND NEW ADULT WINNER!

Guitar
Face
 rocks!" She
Hearts Books
 Blog

I
was born to make music and bring the masses to their knees . . .
until, I wasn't anymore. Until the thought of doing all of this
without him made me sick to my stomach.

Henley
Hendrix survives a crash that kills her closest band mate. She’d
like nothing more than to retire from music, to hide, to heal, to
disappear. She’s tried. But her family is music royalty. Her
brother is a rock star in his own right, and every friend she has is
connected to the business one way or another.

I'll
get sucked back in. I'm scared I won't survive rock-n-roll again.
Won’t survive Jagger, won’t be able to put him back in the
box.

Jagger
Carlye is Henley’s dirty little secret. Rock god, her brother's
best friend, part of his band, and someone who loves the guitar as
much as she does. Henley’s loved him since she was a girl, but
there are some things you don’t do in this world. One of them is
that you don’t risk your brother’s band or your heart in an
industry that feeds on rejection and scandal. Love might not be
enough in a world that grinds you down and puts you in a
fishbowl.

And
then there is Kip. My best friend, a drummer who never shuts his
mouth. I should've fallen in love with him. My world would be so much
easier.

Henley
comes back to the world of rock-n-roll, puts a toe in the water, and
creates a ripple that will rock the safe little life she’s created
for herself.

NOTE:
This is a rock star romance series with a strong female lead, bad
boys, and rock romance. If you are looking for a story of redemption
with comic relief and a heavy sexual mind, you've found it. If you
are offended by hot, tattooed rock stars, who are vulgar, then this
is not the book for you. Please be warned, this book is not for
anyone below the age of 18. The book contains sex, death, violence,
and harsh language.

There's
No Crying in Rock-N-Roll
The
Guitar Face Series Book 2

Henley
Hendrix—Queen of Rock-n-Roll—finds her world shattered and her
heart betrayed, but is determined to get the band back together to
reclaim her title in the world of rock. But when life continues to
spin out of control, so does her behavior. Will she find her strength
again amid all the chaos and pain, or will the bright lights consume
her soul?

This
is a rock star romance series with a strong female lead, bad boys,
and rock romance. This book is not recommended for those under the
age of 18. It is also not recommended for those who take offense to
profanity, sexual situations, drugs, or violence. This is not a
standalone novel. Book One Broken should be read first.

Walking
Back to Georgia
The
Guitar Face Series Book 3

I
died. I fu*&ing died, and when I woke up in a Los Angeles
hospital my best friend walked away from me. It wasn’t quite the
welcoming back to the world of the living I thought I’d receive,
and it rattled me.

After
an overdose, Henley Hendrix retreats to Georgia to chase sobriety and
get her life together. To do that, she’s got to keep her distance
from Jagger and company. But when an old friend pops back into her
life, a private moment is leaked to the world, and someone she never
thought would walk away from her does exactly that.
She’s
got to deal with rejection, a stalker, her return to the rock world
for a promotional tour, jungle peepers, a riot of fans, a 1%
motorcycle club, a one-eyed teddy bear, and two men fighting over
her.

Just
when she’s figured out how to finally be the best version of
“Henley” she can be and how to stay healthy, her world is turned
upside down again when her eyes are opened to something she never
expected.

This
book is not a stand-alone novel. Books 1 and 2 in the Guitar Face
Series should be read first. If you are looking for a story of
redemption with comic relief and a heavy sexual tone, you've found
it. If you are offended by hot, tattooed rock stars, who are vulgar
then this is not the book for you. Please be warned, this book is not
for anyone below the age of 18. The book has sex, death, violence,
and harsh language.

Award-winning
author Sasha Marshall is devoted to giving her readers humorous
adventures with a love story sure to melt their hearts---and their
minds. She wants you to laugh, cry, get angry, and sigh when you find
redemption in the story, because that's the roller coaster of real
life. Her knowledge of the music industry comes from being a touring
concert photographer with legendary bands such as The Allman Brothers
Band and others she met along the way. A self-proclaimed free spirit,
she’s most often found outdoors, or painting a canvas, capturing a

Especially when it comes to mending a broken heart.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks

EXCERPT:

“A reminder, Dr. Becker. If you run into anything unusual, tell me.”

She tried to make sense of what he said. “You mean at the clinic?”

“I mean anywhere. I’ve noticed you tend to run hell-bent into situations you don’t know anything about. It’s a good way to get yourself into a world of trouble.”

Carolyn mulled over his comment. “I wouldn’t do anything stupid.”

“All the same, take care.”

He certainly didn’t have much confidence in her good sense. It ought to make her furious. Instead, her body tingled. Was it the wine? Carolyn wasn’t sure. He moved closer. So close, she could feel his warm breath on her face. His expression remained impassive, yet she detected something within the silvery depths of his eyes.

His palm cupped her cheek and he said, “Are you sure it’s wise to trust me?” She didn’t have an answer since blood pounded through her veins in a most disconcerting way. His eyes held hers, and he leaned closer. Her lips parted, and she let her eyelids close against the magnetic attraction of his gaze. Would he kiss her? She waited expectantly.

A cell phone shrilled, and her eyes flew open. He uttered a soft curse and retrieved his phone. One glance at the screen darkened his face.

“What is it?”

“Sorry. This is important. I’ve got to go.”

“But…” She felt disembodied, as though abruptly awakened from a deep sleep, and pointed toward the oven. “What about dinner?”

“We’ll have dinner another day, but next time it will be on me.”

With one wicked grin, he retrieved his jacket from the chair where it hung. She watched until the door closed behind him, then pondered how to interpret what he said. Dinner? On him? What did he mean by that? A sudden burst of giggles erupted, which quickly turned into hiccups. She held her breath and counted to twenty. The hiccups subsided, but a wisp of smoke curled from the oven. Carolyn leaped up and raced for the kitchen.

Books2Read      Amazon

Excerpt Kendra’s point of view

The scent of
vanilla stirred the air within the bathroom. “Sparky, why aren’t you in the big
house with Derek?” Jenna, in all her ghosty-glory, got my attention using her
pet name for me, an annihilation of my last name. She leaned against the
doorjamb of Derek’s small cottage version of his home and silently tapped her
toe.
“We needed some
thought-provoking space apart.” I turned from the mirror and faced Jenna. “So,
did you honestly believe that I saw ghosts before you became one? I mean
truly.”
“Well, I called
you a few weeks ago when Dad’s life lay in peril from a psycho killer targeting
FBI agents.” Jenna tilted her head, her eyes narrowed. “Is this about Derek?”
“He continues to
struggle with what he saw at the Voodoo Re-resurrection Ritual. I mean, he
watched it, actually saw Buster, and Grandma Ellie with all of the Guardian
Angels, and the soul-lights belonging to the trafficked teens.” A deep
agonizing sigh rolled off my tongue. “You never saw any of the ghosts I did,
and yet you called me for your dad. You had to trust in my ability, right?”
“Listen, Sparky,
honestly, I called because none of the agents could get a handle on the
situation fast enough for me. My concern for Dad had driven me to make the
call. At that point, I wanted to grab at anything, including your ability, even
if I didn’t fully believe or understand it.” Jenna stepped closer, her gray and
fluorescent green running ensemble flattered her slim frame. “I’d wrap my arm
around your shoulder if I could. I still feel like I owe you an apology for so
many things, not believing in your ghost-vision is but one.”
“Well, you put
on a good front for me, because in college, I never doubted your belief in me.”
Jenna chuckled.
“I thought most of what you told me related to your fiction. You were always
such a good story-teller with your wild-wacky imagination. Most of the time, I
figured you set me up for a shock-factor effect.”
A light rap on
the front door announced Derek, but he didn’t enter like usual. Jenna shimmered
out of sight as I strode to the door and opened it. My lips parted as I sucked
in air. Clara Jones, my literary agent…here? “How did you get this address?”
“From your
writer friend, Sharon. I got her information from the last manuscript she sent
to me because you were here.” She peered over my shoulder, glancing around the
inside of the cottage. “Wow, now this is one hell of a writing retreat.” She
pushed past me and stood in the center of the room, gaze darting everywhere
until it settled on me. “Tell me you’ve started the first book in the series. Knixton
House is getting anxious for the media and cover art information, and since I
was in D.C., I thought I might pick it up personally.” She forced a smile. “I’m
beginning to think you’re dodging my calls and text messages.”
Another light
rap on the door, I swung around to Derek. His smile warmed me, but his arched
brow and nod toward Clara indicated his concern.
“Come in and
meet my Literary Agent, Clara Jones. Clara, FBI Special Agent, Derek Knight.”
“We just met.
Mr. Knight told me how to get back here.” And still, Clara moved toward him
with the speed of a booster rocket. Her hand extended and grabbed Derek’s
before he offered it. She studied Derek’s face, her gaze traveled over him,
from head to toe, until his face blazed red.
He pulled his
hand from Clara’s. “Nice to meet you, again. Kendra has mentioned you.”
Clara turned to
me. “Only mentioned?”
“We’ve been
rather busy solving FBI cases.”
With a poof of
vanilla, Jenna reappeared next to Clara. “Wow, she’s a looker. And damnation,
her eyes keep creeping back to Derek.” Jenna chuckled. “You’ll have to muzzle
her or wrap a blindfold around her head.”
I chuckled out
loud. Of course, at the worst inappropriate timing.
“I hate to cut
your visit short, Ms. Jones, but Kendra’s presence is requested at a meeting
downtown D.C., and we are running behind schedule.” Derek pressed his lips
together, tension swept along his jaw and temple.
“Wait a minute,
buster. This woman already has a job.” She poked a finger in Derek’s chest. “In
fact, she’s obligated to complete that job in record-breaking time to meet the
commitment of her book contract.” Clara’s green eyes widened as she glared at
Derek.
“I think bolts
of lightning are flying from her eyeballs and striking Derek, right in the
heart, where her fingernail is buried.” Jenna grinned. “What do you think?”
I forced an
exasperated breath and stepped closer to the duo. “Derek, I need some time to
talk with Clara. Can you go to the meeting without me? You can record it or
just pass on anything I should know.”
Derek grabbed my
elbow and directed me toward the door. “She’ll be only a moment,” he said as
the door slammed behind us. We kept walking away from the cottage and around
the side of Derek’s log home. He stopped and whirled me toward him. “Why is she
here? When she knocked on my door this morning and requested you, I thought she
might be a relative.”
“I have a signed
contract to a new publishing house, and Clara’s nervous about the upcoming
deadlines. With everything going on, I haven’t told her about my decision to
stay here for a while. I’m not sure how to break my contract.” Plus, the fact
that I didn’t look forward to a face-off with Clara. I’d neglected this major
obstacle. “She has no clue about my ability, or why the FBI would use me. It’s
going to take some time to explain.”
“I’m sure the
FBI has some kind of legal documentation we can present to Clara that will
supersede your contracts.” He tilted my face upward and pulled me closer. His
lips touched mine, stealing my breath. His throaty moan electrified the beat of
my heart, and I melted against his body.
Then vanilla
fluffed the air, but I ignored it.
“Sparky, wrap it
up. Little Miss Nasty-Pants is on her way.” Jenna’s face appeared over Derek’s
shoulder. She winked and then vanished.
I broke away
from Derek’s embrace. His stormy-blues smoldered.
Clara flounced
around the corner and ran into Derek’s shoulder. He stood solid as she
stumbled, but then she righted herself, eyeing him and then me. “I’m not
getting a good vibe with what’s happening here, Kendra. We need to talk. In
private.” She glowered at Derek.
“Get this
straightened out.” Derek’s gaze met mine, and then he moved away from Clara.
“I’ll let Director Powers know you’ve been detained. I’m sure there’s something
he can pull out of his hat to help secure your position with the FBI.”
“What’s he
talking about?” Clara’s face flushed to a bright red, almost matching her hair.
“You got time
for a coffee, maybe two? This might take a while to explain.” I nodded to Derek
as he walked away, and then slipped my arm through Clara’s. “Let’s go back to
the cottage. It comes with the best little screened-in porch, very private and
serene.”
