A two-hundred-year-old curse. A tangled thread of mental illness. A growing list of Ross family women dying young. The house where it all began, Desolate Ridge, holds all the secrets.

Abandoned at a hospital when she was only three years old, Aubrey Ross grew up as a ward of the state, passed from one foster family to the next. Having endured years of abuse and neglect, she’s become hardened to the world around her.

She’s flirted with depression and anxiety, and she’s haunted by premonitions. When a strange man approaches Aubrey with information about her past, she knows her life is about to change. Inside the envelope is the deed to a house in Ohio—her ancestral home.

When Aubrey arrives in Rossdale, the town named after her family, she immediately experiences situations she cannot explain. She hears voices, sees apparitions, and has vivid visions of tragedies she can scarcely comprehend. Aubrey comes to realize she is reliving events which have happened to those who came before her.

Then she meets Hank Metzger, the town’s sheriff, whose family has an eerie connection to her own. As the secrets of Desolate Ridge are unearthed, Aubrey begins to understand her destiny is tied to Hank’s in a way she cannot escape.

Mr. Wayfair reached into his pocket and presented Aubrey
with the largest sapphire ring she’d ever seen. It was clearly an antique, and
the blue stone was the exact color of her eyes. Her hand trembled as she opened
her palm and Mr. Wayfair plunked the
piece of jewelry into it. Mesmerized, she slid the ring onto her finger. It fit
perfectly, almost as if it were custom-made for her.

It stopped raining, so Aubrey removed her hood and shook out
her hair. She nibbled nervously on the skin around her fingernails, which was a
nasty habit she’d developed as a young girl and had never outgrown. She
shivered as she felt the brush of a fingertip on her cheek and the sound of a
woman crying.

Aubrey whipped her head around, certain someone was standing behind her. When she turned, she saw
no one but Mr. Wayfair, who appeared unruffled by the sound. He clearly hadn’t
heard the woman crying, or felt the brush of someone’s fingertip.

Goose bumps erupted on
her arms, and the hairs on the back of her neck prickled. Her eye twitched, and
she shivered. It wasn’t particularly cold outside, but Aubrey was chilled to
the bone.

Experiencing a physical reaction due to an unexplained
feeling or occurrence was a phenomenon she’d lived with her entire life. Aubrey
couldn’t explain it, but she had felt something.
Oblivious, Mr. Wayfair reached into the inside pocket of his trench coat and
pulled out another envelope, this one much thicker than the one he’d given her
the previous night. When he placed it into her hands, it was heavy.

“What’s this?” she asked.

“I told you I’ve done
my homework. I knew you wouldn’t have the means to travel, Ms. Ross, so I came
prepared.”

“Prepared? What do you mean?”

“I withdrew a small amount of cash from your family’s account
before I left Ohio. It should be more than enough to cover your travel
expenses,” he clarified.

Aubrey slowly opened the envelope and looked inside. There
were several stacks of cash, bundled into little piles. She flipped through
them, noticing each stack was made up of hundred-dollar bills. She gasped and
searched Mr. Wayfair’s face for an explanation. She’d never seen that much
money in her life.

“How much is in there?”

“I only brought ten thousand with me. I figured that would
be enough to cover whatever you might need until you arrive in Ohio.” He
answered nonchalantly, as if he’d handed
her a twenty-dollar bill.

“You’re telling me there’s
ten thousand dollars in this envelope?” Aubrey knew her eyes were probably the
size of dinner plates, but she couldn’t help it.

“Ms. Ross, I don’t think you fully understand what I’m
trying to explain. You are the sole owner of Desolate Ridge and the beneficiary
of the entire Ross family fortune. The money you’re holding right now is a mere
drop in the bucket. You are a very, very rich woman.” He smiled.

Aubrey felt faint. Surely there must have been some mistake.
She had lived her entire life below the poverty line, and this strange-looking
man was telling her she was rich? Something didn’t add up. There had to be a
catch, some sort of caveat Mr. Wayfair wasn’t disclosing.

My Review:
Haunted house books are my favorite reads of all time and this book did not disappoint. The book also has a bit of mystery to it which is another favorite of mine. There's romance as well. There is lots of violence, in the form of domestic abuse and murder. There are no sex scenes and very little colorful language.

This was my first book by HR Mason but I am hooked. The story was in full swing from page one and did not slow down at all throughout the book. It was a hard book to put down for me, I just wanted to keep reading to see what happened next.

Aubrey Ross was abandoned at a hospital when she was 3 years old. She grew up in the foster system, never getting a true family of her own. As sh is getting off work at a hole in the wall diner in Seattle Washington she is approached by a man informing she has inherited her families estate and tons of money in Rossville Ohio. In a whirlwind Aubrey finds herself on a plane heading to Ohio and the unknown.

Aubrey's main goal is to find out about her family, but she may of bitten off more than she can chew. She finds out almost immediately the house is haunted and that the house also holds many secrets and it is up to her to bring those secrets to life to break the family curse.

My Review:
I am a huge fan of Lauren Carr. I love being a member of the family to her different series. Each new book to any of her different series drags you into the family. All of her series do link together in some way. So you are never lost trying to figure out who is who in her books. They play some part no matter how big or small in every book and cross series as well. I love that each of her books from any of the series can also be read read as stand alones or out of order and you will not be confused. IT is better to read them in order just so you get to know new characters that are introduced but that is total optional. Also her books are not usually the plain old mystery. In all of her books every time I think I know who done it, Lauren tosses in a twist here and a turn there until there are actually quite a few suspects at once. I feel like I am one of the characters investigating the crime.

Lauren's books are also what I consider clean reads there are very little if any colorful words, very few sex references and no in depth erotic scenes.

The Root of Murder is the 4th book in the A Lovers in Crime Mystery Series.   Cameron Gates is a homicide Detective and is married to Joshua. She gets a call in the early morning hours of a body burning in a field. She quickly finds out while investigating that people are not always what they seem. When they find ut that their victim is living a double life things get way out of the ordinary. Their victim has 2 wives and 2 families. Right after his daughters meet and confront him is when he turns up on fire int he field. The list of suspects gets quite long, took me until the last few chapters to actually figure out who was the murder.

Another great book by Lauren that I would highly recommend. I did listen to the Audiobook. The book is narrated by Mike Alger as with I think all of her books, at least the ones I have listened to and there have been many. Mike does a great job bringing Lauren's books to life.

Lauren Carr
Meet the author:    With over forty years of writing and publishing experience, international best-selling author Lauren Carr has played an active role in the revolution of independent authors.

While studying for her college degree in English and journalism, Lauren worked as an editor and layout design artist with the federal government in Washington, DC. It was there that Lauren learned the foundations necessary for book publishing.

Lauren’s debut mystery, A Small Case of Murder was a finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Awards. On the heels of that success, she accepted an offer from a traditional publisher for A Reunion to Die For.

When it came time to publish her third book, Lauren rejected offers from two traditional publishers, choosing instead to independently publish It’s Murder, My Son, which made it to #1 in sales on Amazon in cozy mysteries. She has never regretted her decision to become an independent author.

Realizing that she could use her experiences to help other writers achieve their dreams to become published authors, Lauren established Acorn Book Services, offering professional services to independent authors.

The international best-selling author of over twenty-five murder mysteries, Lauren has gone on dozens of virtual blog tours (most with iRead Book Tours!) and has seen first-hand that how an author publishes is irrelevant to success. The key is exposure to potential readers. Virtual blog tours are an excellent avenue for book promotion. Book spotlights, reviews, author guest posts and interviews are forever, unlike in-person book events, which become a memory as soon as they have finished.

With her vast experience, it seemed only natural for Lauren Carr to jump at the opportunity to join the iReads Book Tours team. She lives with her husband, and two spoiled rotten German shepherds on a mountain in West Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

You can usually find Lauren plotting her next murder mystery in her writer's studio on her mountaintop. Visit Lauren's  website https://mysterylady.net/ to learn more about her murder mysteries, Acorn Book Services, and now iReads Book Tours!

Audiobook Blog Tour The Dark Lands (Angelbound Origins #5) by Christina Bauer

The Dark Lands (Anglbound Origins #5)
by Christina Bauer
Genre: YA Supernatural
Monster House Books

Summary:

Nineteen-year-old Myla Lewis is loving life–she’s now a wife, mother, and Queen of the Thrax. Oh yeah, and being a super-powerful demigoddess who moves souls into Heaven or Hell doesn’t suck, either. In fact, everything is pretty much awesome. Until something craptastic happens.

Her honorary older brother Walker enters the Dark Lands, home to the rule-loving ghouls, and vanishes without a trace.

Now it’s up to Myla to solve the mystery of Walker’s disappearance. Of course, Myla likes interacting with ghouls about as much as elective dental surgery. To make matters harder, everyone thinks that Walker is simply taking a well-deserved vacation. But Myla and her Angelbound love, Lincoln, both suspect that a new criminal called the Viper took Walker in order to release Lucifer, the ex-King of the Angels and a bloodthirsty killer.

Long story short, Myla and Lincoln have only twenty four hours to rescue their good friend and stop Lucifer from taking over the after-realms. Even for them, this may be a too-tall order, especially when Lucifer’s mysterious past with Myla’s father threatens the very future of the after-realms.

PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE SERIES

Book One:
Angelbound (Angelbound Origins #1)
by Christina Bauer

Summary from Goodreads:

Eighteen year old Myla Lewis is a girl who loves two things: kicking ass and kicking ass. She’s not your every day quasi-demon, half-demon and half-human, girl. For the past five years, Myla has lived for the days she gets to fight in Purgatory’s arena. When souls want a trial by combat for their right to enter heaven or hell, they go up against her, and she hasn’t lost a battle yet.

But as she starts her senior year at Purgatory High, the arena fights aren’t enough to keep her spirits up anymore. When the demons start to act weird, even for demons, and the King of the Demons, Armageddon, shows up at Myla’s school, she knows that things are changing and it’s not looking good for the quasi-demons. Myla starts to question everything, and doesn’t like the answers she finds. What happened seventeen years ago that turned the quasi-demons into slave labor? Why was her mom always so sad? And why won’t anyone tell her who her father is? Things heat up when Myla meets Lincoln, the High Prince of the Thrax, a super sexy half-human and half-angel demon hunter. But what’s a quasi-demon girl to do when she falls for a demon hunter? It’s a good thing that Myla’s not afraid of breaking a few rules. With a love worth fighting for, Myla’s going to shake up Purgatory.

Book Two:

Scala (Angelbound Origins #2)
by Christina Bauer

Summary:

Nineteen-year-old Myla Lewis has transformed into Great Scala, the only being with the power to move souls out of Purgatory and into Heaven or Hell. Trouble is, a magical object called Lucifer’s Orb is limiting Myla’s abilities. If she tries to move a soul, the Orb’s forcing her to send that spirit straight to Hell.
So, what’s a girl to do? Send innocents to the fiery down-under?
No way. Myla’s gone on a supernatural strike. No souls go anywhere until the Orb’s history. It’s the right thing to do, but Purgatory’s Soul Storage buildings are turning into time bombs. No spirits are moving out, while millions keep coming in. Myla’s determined to find the Orb and send the innocent to Heaven, but she’s running out of time. Soon, the containment fields will burst, releasing a mob of homicidal ghosts.
With Soul Storage ready to explode, Myla’s got enough on her plate without her old enemy, Lady Adair, causing problems. Adair is launching an ingenious campaign to take away everything that Myla holds dear, including Myla’s Angelbound love, Prince Lincoln.
Between their clever ideas and toe-curling kisses, Myla and Lincoln are fighting back. But will they beat the clock or lose everything to Adair’s devious schemes?

Book Three:
Acca (Angelbound Origins #3)
by Christina Bauer

Summary:

In just one week, supernatural warrior Myla Lewis must discover enough evidence to send the evil House of Acca to prison… or she’ll end up in jail herself, along with her fiancé, Prince Lincoln. No pressure.

To gather proof, Myla and Lincoln go undercover at an all-girl’s high school on Earth. Lincoln acts as the new gym teacher; Myla becomes the school’s least popular transfer student ever. To stop them from getting the goods, Acca releases Hell on Earth. Literally. Good thing Myla and Lincoln aren’t afraid of a tough fight. This one promises to be the hardest yet. After all, who ever said high school wasn’t hell?

Book Four:
Thrax (Angelbound Origins #4)
by Christina Bauer

Summary:

"I’m blown away by the intricate and magical world that Christina Bauer has created.” - SolaFide Publishing

Myla Lewis has married Prince Lincoln, and now they’re expecting! All the after-realms rejoice. Myla should be happy too, but she has a serious problem. The day after their honeymoon ended, Myla’s real husband disappeared.

The man who’s sharing her bed is an imposter.

Myla tries explaining about “Evil Lincoln,” but no one will listen. The reason? People think that Myla’s supernatural pregnancy is making her cray cray. Mostly because that’s what Evil Lincoln is telling everyone, and that man’s a great liar. What a creep.

There’s no way Myla will take this lying down, though. She’s going to rescue her man, and she has a pretty good idea where he’s being held. With her best friend, Cissy, along to help, Myla sneaks off to Earth. All she has to do is blend in with the humans, avoid Evil Lincoln, and find her real man before the baby arrives. How hard can it be?

About the Author:

Oh, and she includes lots of humor and kick-ass chicks, too.
Christina graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School with BA’s in English along with Television, Radio, and Film Production. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby.
