GENRE: Non-Fiction, Self-Improvement
Congratulations, indie author!

You’ve finished your book—now all that’s left is to get it out into the world. Unfortunately, for many authors, it’s that step of the process that’s the hardest. Marketing is seen as something to be feared, dreaded, and outsourced as much as possible—a daunting task that will leave you drained.

But fear not! The team at Wise Ink knows a thing or two about how to sell your book. And they’re here to tell you everything.

Buzz is the indie author’s ultimate guide to marketing effectively, inexpensively, and excitingly. Within its pages, you’ll find answers to the questions on every writer’s mind:

• What does it really mean to “market” my book?

• How do I best reach my specific audience?

• What are effective ways to promote my book via social media?

• Do I really need to be a public speaker?

In addition to this, the Wise Ink marketing team has provided sample content calendars, email promotions, a marketing starter kit, and more to ensure you’re prepared to get out there and sell your book.

Marketing doesn’t have to be a horror story! Let Buzz teach you how to take your book to its maximum potential.

Read an Excerpt:

How do I best reach my specific audience?

You will hear us say this over and over again, as it is one of the Ten Commandments of book publishing: Know thine audience!

Think carefully about your “ideal” reader. What do they do in their spare time? Where do they normally purchase things? Where do they go for information? And most importantly, what are some unique and organic ways to get your book and message in front of them?

Hopefully, by the time you begin marketing your book, you will have already thought through these things carefully. Still, it’s a good idea to refresh your memory. Also, be concrete in how you determine your market demographics. Go deeper than the standard questions around gender, age, education, and geographic location. Those are just places to start.

When describing your ideal reader, be specific with the details that matter, such as how much time they have to read, how they might use your book day-to-day, and how they generally make recommendations to others. Another thing to do is segment your readers into three specialized subgroups—communities that align with each reader’s professional identities and personal aspirations. This helps you dig even deeper into the psychology of how to sell your book smartly and where it makes the most sense to spend your time. As an example: To market your business book, you might segment your readers into millennials and recent grads, aspiring entrepreneurs, and motivational speakers. If you've just published a sci-fi thriller, your subgroups might include fans of the popular sci-fi series Black Mirror, sci-fi writers who frequent fan-fiction sites, and people who attend conventions like WorldCon.

How does your ideal reader obtain information? Blogs? Magazines? Newspapers? Ads? What social media sites do they frequent? Be as specific as you can here. These are the places you will want to target in terms of marketing.

Where does your ideal reader shop? Think beyond bookstores. Are they frequent travelers? (Maybe they shop in airports a lot.) Do they have stores they tend to gravitate toward? Make a list of these places, and find connections there to share your book with.

GENRE:   Romantic Suspense, Contemporary romance
Question: A seductress steals your husband, rips apart your family and shatters your dreams.

You:

a) Wish them luck, and walk away with your head held high (because that’s what society expects you to do)?

b) Quietly seethe, but accept that there is just nothing you can do about it (because it easier for everyone if you do nothing)?

c) Dig up dirt on the bitch (because someone like this would undoubtedly have dirt), use it to sabotage their relationship, then sit back with a glass of Pinot Grigio and watch them burn?

Answer: C. Oh, totally C.

.......................

Meet Scarlett Smyth. She’s drop-dead gorgeous, has a rocking body and has an above average IQ. She brags that she can ensnare any husband or taken male, and …she often does. She also is ambitious and has a penchant for anything expensive.

When the shrewd and ambitious temptress lays eyes on Bradley Murdoch, she believes she has found her dream man and a ticket to the high life she’s entitled to. There are just two problems:

1) Bradley is married to Rival. Happily at that.

2) They have children. Adorable little girls.

Do those facts deter Scarlett in any way? No, not at all. She is determined to steal Bradley, smoothly replace Rival in his life and show him how to really live life.

In a calculating move, the seductress (she is so good at seduction, she is even penning a book on it) befriends the quiet and unassuming Rival and worms her way into Bradley’s life.

There’s more: To expedite things, Scarlett the mistress, engineers a way to wipe Rival out of the picture - sends the clueless wife on a “vacation”.

But Scarlett may have underestimated her opponent. When Rival realizes the extent of the betrayal, she decides, even though she lacks Scarlett’s genius IQ, not to turn the other cheek. In fact, she is determined to win back her husband, believing that he is a good man who is simply mistaking lust for love. She believes that someone like Scarlett has to have skeletons in her cupboards and she begins to snoop around, anything she can use against the other woman, anything that can help her exact revenge.

What Rival doesn’t realize is: no one takes on Scarlett - no one dares. The betrayed wife and the other woman collide. The result is another gripping suspense thriller from best selling author Eve Rabi.

If you've enjoyed Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Girl on a Train by Paula Hawkins, books by Marian Keyes and Liane Moriarty, you will enjoy this 'suspenseful, romantic and entertaining tale of love, lust and revenge.'

Read an Excerpt:

Mistress: Just because he’s taken, doesn’t mean I’m going to pass on him. No friggin’ way! When I set my sights on a man, I do whatever I can to get him. This is one method I employ to get the taken male. Take note now. I orchestrate an encounter with the wife or girlfriend, cultivate a friendship with her, then surreptitiously extract vital information about my target from her. Women love to talk about their soul mates, bore you with details, overshare even. Within a matter of hours, I know everything I need to know about my target.

To loosen her tongue, I engineer a visit to her home and take along a muscle relaxant – a bottle of tequila. The tongue is a muscle, remember? Be generous with your shots, keep it flowing and it will pay off. Let them talk, listen without interruptions, then cunningly flatter and charm them until they lower their guard. When they eventually pass out from the tequila, feel free to snoop around their home, their purses and even their mobile phone to gather more information about your mark. Remember never to leave any signs of your snooping as word can spread.

To appear innocuous, it is wise to fake a boyfriend or a love interest. I do this to prevent the wife or girlfriend from seeing me as a threat and thwarting my plans. My added measure is a ton of photos of my phony boyfriend (borrowed from the internet) on my phone and on my fake Facebook account, which I readily flash at them.

His dimples came out to play when a noise outside of the room had him stepping closer to her. Their bodies ended up mere centimeters apart.

Then it hit her.

The body-tingling, wake up girl, he’s here…masculine scent. His ambrosial aroma was a mouthwatering blend of masculine musk overlaid with a hint of black licorice and ylang-ylang. She inhaled to capture a whiff of the intoxicating tang. Her nipples hardened into nubs as her clit swelled in appreciation. Holy shamoka…was he ever potent!

“Do you smell that?” She was too enthralled to be embarrassed about the husky rasp coming out of her mouth. “What is it?” She raised her gaze to his and got lost in his eyes. She moved her body to mold into his.

He mirrored the deep breath she took, then dropped the weapon as he enfolded her to him, his mouth taking control of hers. At first, his lips nudged softly until the innocent embrace kicked into high gear. He wrapped his arms around her to slide his body over hers. He demanded entrance…and she gladly invited him in.

When their tongues joined, her mouth exploded in a multi-layered buffet of sensual decadence. He had slight nubs along the side of his tongue that he used to make carnal demands. Black licorice and tart spice combined with musky man flooded her senses.

VBT The Young Adult Writer's Journey by Elizabeth Fortin-Hinds & Janet Schrader-Post

The Young Adult Writer's Journey
by Elizabeth Fortin-Hinds & Janet Schrader-Post

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Non-Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Finally, an all-inclusive book on young adult fiction must-do, don’t do and how-to. If you want to write a young adult novel, you need to read this book first. Coauthored by an award-winning YA author and an acquisitions editor, both experts on kids and what they like to read, this encyclopedia contains all you need to start or improve a career as a YA fiction author.

From an examination of the market, genre and its sub-genres, to mechanics and the business, everything is at your fingertips. This amazing writer’s resource is written in a relaxed and interesting style, with plenty of contemporary references and examples for clear understanding and easier application.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Joseph Campbell was a professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College, where he worked in comparative mythology and religious studies. He was strongly influenced by Carl Jung's view of myth. In his 1949 work The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell described the basic mythic structure as follows:
A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered, and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. (Campbell, Joseph (1949). The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Princeton: Princeton University Press. p. 23.)
His iconic classic deconstructs universal story patterns. In his study of the myth of the hero, Campbell posits the existence of a Monomyth (a word he borrowed from James Joyce), a universal pattern, structure, found in heroic tales in every culture. While outlining the basic stages of this mythic cycle, he also explores common variations in the hero’s journey, which, he argues, is an operative metaphor, not only for an individual, but for a culture as well. Although the stories may vary to suit the needs and beliefs of a specific culture, the underlying universal archetypes remain.
Christopher Vogler used this hero’s journey to write, The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers. He simplified Campbell’s 17 steps into 12, handy in today’s 12-step minded society. What he did that was fantastic is make it more accessible for modern writers, who are not always scholars. There are several similar editions, including one for screenwriters. Women like Maureen Murdock have written books specifically about The Heroine’s Journey. Although the steps may vary, the universal pattern, used in a novel or screenplay, creates a story with themes that resonate across cultures. It is so powerful, creating hit after hit, that it was required reading for Disney executives, a company that knows the importance of creating a hero’s journey to appeal to mass audiences. Using this pattern to construct books in Young Adult novels provides the reader with a satisfying experience.
To illustrate the hero’s journey, it’s easier to understand in the context of a classic young adult book/movie, such as Harry Potter, already used to illustrate points throughout this book. It will be broken down for you according to the different stages in The Hero’s Journey, with particular attention to how the journey relates to a YA hero/heroine, the focus of this entire book. Following are some things you need to think of before you sit down to write your first scene.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Daughter of a Colonel, Janet Schrader-Post lived the military life until she got out of high school. She lived in Hawaii and worked as a polo groom for fifteen years, then moved to Florida where she became a reporter. For ten years she covered kids in high school and middle school. Kids as athletes, kids doing amazing things no matter how hard their circumstances. It impressed her, and it awed her. “How wonderful teens are. They have spirit and courage in the face of the roughest time of their lives. High school is a war zone. Between dodging bullies, school work and after school activities, teens nowadays have a lot on their plate. I wrote stories about them and I photographed them. My goal was to see every kid in their local newspaper before they graduated.”
Janet love kids and horses, and she paints and writes. Now she lives in the swampland of Florida with too many dogs and her fifteen-year-old granddaughter. She started to write young adult fiction with the help of her son, Gabe Thompson, who teaches middle school. Together they have written a number of award-winning YA novels in both science fiction and fantasy.
Elizabeth Fortin-Hinds knows kids well. She spent decades teaching teens and adults to write and improve their reading skills. As a literacy expert and certified coach, she helped both teachers from elementary to secondary and preservice graduate students learn to improve reading and writing instruction. She has taught at both the secondary and graduate level, everything from rhetoric, essays, and thesis statements, to poetry, short stories, and how to write a novel. She has learned to use both sides of her brain simultaneously, but enjoys the creative side the most, learning to play piano, draw and paint, and find time for her own writing since retiring from her “day” jobs.
A “true believer” in Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, mythic structures, she uses that lens when considering manuscripts for Tell-Tale Publishing Group, a company she founded with some friends from her critique group a decade ago.
Interview with Elizabeth Fortin-Hinds
1. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
Actually, in my fiction books I am much more of a Pantser, though I love to brainstorm the basic outline for the story with one of my critique buddies so I have a ‘feel’ for the story before I begin. I spend the first chapter getting to know the tone and the main characters and often throw that part out once I get further into the story and the characters have taken on their own personalities, motivations and goals. Frankly, I wish more writers did that—throw out the first chapter and start in the middle of the action.
2. Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
I feel the nonfiction title, The Young Adult Writer’s Journey, is a must read for anyone who writes YA fiction. A lot of the basics may be no news to you, but I feel that there will be some provocative kernels even a seasoned YA writer can use to enhance their WIP or future stories. The information comes from Janet’s background as an award-winning YA author, and my background as an acquisitions editor, noting what’s missing or doesn’t quite hit the mark in many YA submissions. Both of us have spent years working with kids and getting to know them. I taught kids to read and write and taught creative writing. Reading their Friday whatever you want to vent about journals was often very eye-opening too. Kids can be brutally honest, especially when talking to ‘dear journal’.  I was always stunned when kids told me, “I never knew you actually read those.” Hey, I read the back of cereal boxes.
3. Have you written any other books that are not published?
I have just finished my second collaboration with Janet Post. We are writing a YA series titled Beauties and Their Beasts.  The first in the series, Annabelle and the Jackal, is with the Beta Readers. It’s a dystopian fantasy and naturally a romance.  It should be out in early 2019. We want to launch it at the Tucson Festival of Books in March. The paperback edition to The Young Adult Writer’s Journey will be out before then too. We’ll both be there, so if you’re one of the over 130,000 readers able to make it each year, be sure to say hi.
4. Pen or type writer or computer?
Always computer. I’ve been using one since they were able to actually crash from too much text data input…and yes that happened to me when I was writing my very first novel. Much of that novel has been lost, so it’s never been published, but it was an historical vampire romance set during the reign of Peter the Great. It’s been decades, but I believe the title was: Shades of Darkness. Tame by today’s standards (think Shades of Gray) back then it was really racy and after an ask for more, Zebra eventually passed due to that fact. I’ve never reworked it. At that point, I went back to school and became a teacher and didn’t write more fiction until I retired.
5. Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to make a comment or take a look at this work. With millions of books published every year, it’s an honor to be one readers notice at all.
The book will be $0.99 during the tour
GENRE: YA, sci-fi, thriller, apocalyptic, conspiracy theory
In Liverpool, England, 18-year-old student and Freerunner, Bodie, survives an assassination attempt and flees for his life. His only thought is to secure the safety of girlfriend, Lily, and reach his journalist cousin, Anthony.
Bodie has stumbled into a diabolical plot from the world's governments to end terrorism, famine and global warming in one swift swoop. So begins a race for survival, joined by a variety of other characters, moving from one set piece to the next, as the world that everyone knows is about to change forever.
Read an Excerpt:
He didn’t have to wait long. But, instead of one or two marked police cars rushing to detain someone who had reported a murder, he was treated to the worrying spectacle of three black Range Rovers, with blacked-out windows, arriving at speed and whizzing up the ramp into the car-park. Very sinister indeed.
He got into the Beetle and drove off. Soon, he noticed that his bimbo manager had left the car with almost no fuel, so he pulled into the first petrol station that he saw. He filled up, before going in to pay with his Visa card. He also bought a packet of cheese and onion crisps, which he proceeded to eat, while he used the outside cash machine. Moving towards the Beetle, he suddenly heard the sound of the helicopter again, seemingly immediately overhead. Quickly, he grabbed the gun and ammunition from the glove compartment and bolted away. If he had driven out, he just knew they would have been straight onto him. Instead, he ran through the garage car wash, skipped a low wall, and was away across wasteland.
Vedie
We lie in bed on top of the sheets. Mateo’s on his belly; I’m on my side right next to him. We’re bare-assed and aren’t being shy about it. I trace the raised, puckered-up skin of his back scars with my finger. And he lets me.
We don’t say a thing, though. I figure these scars say it all. This man has suffered, and that’s all I need to know. But he suffered at the hands of somebody who didn’t have a reason. At least Marcus and Tyrone and Juan had a good reason for what they did to me—they think what I am is warped and twisted, and they wanted to fix me to be straight and narrow.
After about half an hour, Mateo flips over onto his back and stares up into my eyes. I want so bad for him to tell me what went down—how he got scars from his neck to his ass—but he doesn’t offer an explanation for it and keeps running a finger over the bruises on my throat. He says, “Joey hasn’t gotten what’s coming to him for what he did to you.”
“Did the asshole who did that shit to your back get what was coming to him?” I decide I might as well put myself out there, or I’m never going to learn one damn thing about the man beside me.
Immediately, Mateo starts sweating. His perfect cut body glazes over with a light sheen of moisture, even though he’s not pumping iron on his front porch. His breathing speeds up, too. But his eyes—the color of coffee when it’s swimming in cream—stay fixed on the ceiling instead of rolling back in his head. “Daniel’s dead, if that’s what you mean.”
Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—one in law school, another a professional dancer, a third studying at Mia’s alma mater, Boston College, and the baby finally off to college. (Yes, the nest is empty.) She publishes LGBTQ fiction and romance when not editing National Honor Society essays, offering opinions on college and law school applications, helping to create dance bios, and reviewing English papers. Her husband of twenty-five years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about this, as it is a sensitive subject.
Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of young people who are challenged by the circumstances of their lives and relationships. She has a great affinity for the tortured hero in literature, and as a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with tales of tortured heroes and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She has NineStar Press to thank for providing an alternate place to stash her stories.
Her books have been featured in Kirkus Reviews magazine and have won Rainbow Awards for Best Transgender Contemporary Romance and Best YA Lesbian Fiction, a Reader Views’ Book by Book Publicity Literary Award, the Jack Eadon Award for Best Book in Contemporary Drama, an Indie Fab Award, a First Place Royal Dragonfly Award for Cultural Diversity, a First Place Story Monsters Purple Dragonfly Award for YA Fiction, among others.
Mia Kerick is a social liberal and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology. GENRE: Historical Fiction
BLURB:
She was born to serve the Goddess Ix Chel. But K'inuuw Mat is destined to continue the Palenque (Lakam Ha) dynasty by marriage to Tiwol, fourth son of famous ruler Pakal. Trained in prophetic arts, she uses scrying to foresee the face of the man with whom she will bear the dynastic heir—but it is not her husband's image. She is shocked upon arriving at Palenque to recognize that face as her husband's older brother, Kan Bahlam. They are immediately attracted, sharing deep interest in astronomy. Though she resists, the magnetic force of their attraction propels them into forbidden embraces, until Kan Bahlam designs a bold plan that would solve his inability to produce a son—if he can gain his brother's cooperation.
Set in the splendor of Lakam Ha's artistic and scientific zenith, royal family conflicts and ambitions play out in a tapestry of brilliant Mayan accomplishments in calendars, astronomy, architecture, arts, and secret language codes that will astound people centuries later. As K'inuuw Mat contends with explosive emotions, she must answer the Goddess' mandate to preserve Mayan culture for future generations. Her passion with Kan Bahlam leads to a pale daughter and bold son who carry this out as their civilization begins the decline and eventual collapse her prophetic vision foresees.
One great cycle rolls into the next . . .
Contemporary Mexican archeologist Francesca and her partner Charlie, a British linguist, venture into Chiapas jungles to a remote Maya village, seeking to unravel her grandmother's secrets. The hostile village shaman holds the key, but refuses to share with outsiders the scandal that leads to foreign blood and ancient Palenque lineages. Only by re-claiming her own shamanic heritage can Francesca learn the truth of who she is, and bring her dynasty into the present.
Excerpt One:
Eyes closed, K’inuuw Mat breathed again on the stone and said her own prayer inwardly: Ix Chel, guide my vision, open my inner sight. All is done in your service.
Extending her arm over the bowl, she gently slipped the stone into the water and watched as it settled to the bottom. Rings of ripples spread quickly across the water’s surface, rebounded from the rim and crossed each other, creating a tiny jumble that soon dissipated. When the surface was again smooth, K’inuuw Mat stared fixedly at it, clearing her mind of all thoughts. She watched and waited for an image to appear. Her task was to read in the scrying water the image of the animal that the acolyte Olal held in mind.
At first the water only reflected clouds passing above and a corner of one building. Trying not to blink, K’inuuw Mat kept staring and intensified her focus.
Animal of the jungle, animal of the fields, animal of the plains, whoever you are, come to me now, she called mentally.
Slowly, tantalizing shapes began forming on the water’s surface. She could not make out a distinct feature that might reveal which animal was starting to appear. Breathing in deeply, she closed both eyes and intensified her intention. On the exhalation, she expanded her awareness and opened herself to receive.
Both eyelids flew up and she fixed her gaze upon the water. There, almost as clearly as if she was seeing it on a jungle path, was the face of a gray fox. Its dark nose quivered, sniffing for a scent; its sharp eyes with pale brows stared at her below large cupped ears. The image remained for a brief time on the surface, and then dissolved.
“A gray fox!” she exclaimed.
Olal, the acolyte holding the animal image in mind smiled and clapped her hands together.
“It is so!” she said. “You have seen truly.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Leonide (Lennie) Martin: Retired California State University professor, former Family Nurse Practitioner, Author and Maya researcher, Research Member Maya Exploration Center.
My books bring ancient Maya culture and civilization to life in stories about both actual historical Mayans and fictional characters. I've studied Maya archeology, anthropology, and history from the scientific and indigenous viewpoints. While living for five years in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, I apprenticed with Maya Elder Hunbatz Men, becoming a Solar Initiate and Maya Fire Women in the Itzá Maya tradition. I've studied with other indigenous teachers in Guatemala, including Maya Priestess-Daykeeper Aum Rak Sapper and Maya elder Tata Pedro. The ancient Mayas created the most highly advanced civilization in the Western hemisphere, and my work is dedicated to their wisdom, spirituality, scientific, and cultural accomplishments through compelling historical novels.
My interest in ancient Mayan women led to writing the Mayan Queens' series called Mists of Palenque. This 4-book series tells the stories of powerful women who shaped the destinies of their people as rulers themselves, or wives of rulers. These remarkable Mayan women are unknown to most people. Using extensive research and field study, I aspire to depict ancient Palenque authentically and make these amazing Mayan Queens accessible to a wide readership.
My writing has won awards from Writer's Digest for short fiction, and The Visionary Mayan Queen: Yohl Ik'nal of Palenque (Mists of Palenque Series Book 1) received the Writer's Digest 2nd Annual Self-Published eBook award in 2015. The Controversial Mayan Queen: Sak K'uk of Palenque (Book 2) published in 2015. The Mayan Red Queen: Tz'aakb'u Ahau of Palenque (Book 3) received a Silver Medal in Dan Poynter's Global eBook Awards for 2016. The Prophetic Mayan Queen: K'inuuw Mat of Palenque (Book 4) is the final in the series, published in November 2018.
I live with my husband David Gortner and two white cats in Oregon's Willamette Valley wine country, where I enjoy gardening, hiking, and wine tasting.
Interview with Leonide Martin:
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
Most fun to write were scenes on the Caribbean Island Cozumel, where young K'inuuw Mat went to learn divination arts from priestesses of Goddess Ix Chel. She believed her life would be devoted to serving the Goddess, and spent happy days learning how to scry and use healing herbs. She delighted in adventures through snake infested jungles, along glorious beaches with shell-strewn coves, seeking rare flowers and herbs, going through menarche rites, and performing sacred rituals. It was customary to seek prophesies from the Oracle of Ix Chel, so K'inuuw Mat's mother brought her daughters to the Oracle. Both daughters were devastated by the Oracle's predictions and stumbled away in tears. K'inuuw Mat's dream was shattered. She struggled against the prophecy that her destiny was marrying into the leading Mayan royal family and producing an heir to save the dynasty. This initial scenario sets up the conflicts and opportunities that emerge as she embraces the Goddess' mandate.
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
While I love K'inuuw Mat and would feel natural spending time with her, the most provocative character is Kan Bahlam, oldest brother of her husband, and heir to the throne of Palenque. Kan Bahlam was a genius, a mathematician and astronomer, who invented a secret coded language and new Maya calendar. He was also a man of gargantuan appetites with few morals, with burning ambition to become ruler. His father, famous ruler Pakal, lived to be 80 so Kan Bahlam had a long wait. I would spend time with him watching how he filled his days and used his restless energies, ranging from travels around the Maya lands to creating an academy of science and astronomy. He excelled at playing the grueling Mayan ball game, and was infamous for lustful pursuits. Kan Bahlam had other problems; his wife bore no children and he fell in love with K'inuuw Mat. How he deals with this situation and the unexpected outcomes make a gripping story line.
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
Marion Zimmer-Bradley's The Mists of Avalon. It's a fabulous model of mythology, history, and mysticism that probes deeply into human relations and cultural values. My greatest ambition is to write fiction in this tradition.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
They're about half real and half fictional. I'm writing historical fiction and romance, based on information from archeology and recorded history. The main royal family characters are all real people, as well as many nobles and warriors. We don't have lots of details about their personal lives, even less for the women. That's where my author's imagination comes into play. I needed to create some fictional characters to flesh out the story.
5. What made you want to become a writer?
It naturally grew from my love of reading. Writing came easily to me; as a pre-teen I penned Western stories in a spiral notebook. My university career required publishing books and articles. The idea of writing fiction sprang up near retirement. I wanted to share my fascination about the ancient Mayas, and knew more people read fiction than textbooks. I hope you'll want to read this book, and plunge into the Maya's exotic, advanced, and astonishing culture full of pageantry and mysticism. Thanks so much to T's Stuff for hosting me, and to you for taking time to read this blog.
