GENRE: Fantasy (epic)

When undertaker brothers Corran and Rigan Valmonde became outlaw monster hunters and fled beyond the walls of Ravenwood, they thought they had defeated the source of the abominations that killed so many of their friends and loved ones. But the more successful they become at destroying the creatures, the more they realize a greater evil is at work – larger and more monstrous than they ever could imagine…

Read an Excerpt:

A powerfully built creature crouched in the middle of the workshop, muscles tensed to fight. The monster stood, revealing itself to be the height of a tall man, but more powerfully built. Leathery gray skin with patches of sparse brown hair covered its naked body. Its arms were muscled like a dockhand, with equally massive thighs. The feet looked like the paws of a big dog, while the hands had thick fingers that ended in claws. The wolf-like face and head and the four red eyes confirmed Rigan’s guess. Capcaun.

Training and practice had Rigan moving left while Corran went right. The capcaun tracked them both, showing no sign of fear. Rigan grounded his magic, calmed his thoughts, and raised one hand, focusing all his will on his intention.

A stream of fire lanced from his hand, striking the capcaun in the chest. Rigan set his jaw and narrowed his gaze, widening the flame jet, forcing it to burn hotter. The smell of burning hair filled the workshop, and the capcaun roared in anger, but though its skin blistered and charred, the fire did not destroy him.

Rigan’s heart pounded in his chest. They had agreed to lead with their strongest defense, seeing no reason to get hurt working up to a magical assault. He knew with certainty that the fire would have immolated a normal man, and more than one type of monster would have fallen to the flames as well. Yet the capcaun stood before them.

VBT Dickensen Academy by Christine Grabowski

Dickensen Academy
by Christine Grabowski

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Young YA - fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Dickensen Academy isn’t a typical boarding school. The faculty is hiding an unbelievable secret within their fine arts program. When Autumn Mattison receives an invitation to attend the high school, she yearns to escape her overbearing father yet remains reluctant to leave her mother and brother. Her doubts fade away when a vivid dream convinces her she belongs there.

Away from home, Autumn discovers a unique school environment that awakens her creative potential, and her new friends become like a second family. However, as she uncovers more about the dark side of the school and struggles with its curriculum, she questions whether Dickensen Academy is truly where she belongs.

When tragedy strikes, Autumn must learn to believe in her own power and stand up to her greatest fear or risk having her memories destroyed to protect the school’s secrets. Caught between secrets and dreams, can she find her true self?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Clues to the secret existed from day one, yet they appeared to belong to separate puzzles. Most students either missed these signs or chose to ignore them. We were busy acclimating—as the faculty called it—to a new environment. Some outsiders might call what they did to us those initial weeks a form of brainwashing or fostering a cult-like mentality.
But not me.
I agreed with Principal Locke. We weren’t ready. We needed time to separate from our families and become a cohesive group. And some of us, myself included, even needed a little nudge to accept the invitation. If someone had told us the truth on Day One why they’d brought us to Dickensen Academy, we would have never believed it. We’d think they were crazy. Or worse, we’d turn around and run back home. But if we left, we would have missed out on something extraordinary. Something worth the wait.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Dickensen Academy is Christine’s debut YA novel. After graduating from the University of Washington, she earned her MBA at the University at Albany. She honed her technical writing skills in marketing and consulting but attributes the creative part of the process to her passion for reading.

When she isn’t reading or writing, Christine can often be found running, skiing, or hiking. She lives in Newcastle, Washington, with her supportive husband, two avid teen readers, and their energetic wheaten terriers.

Interview with Christine Grabowski
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

I love when Autumn arrives on campus and immediately has a sense of déjà vu as she tours the campus, meets her roommate, and runs into Ben. And then when she looks down at her phone after her parents leave and discovers she doesn’t have a signal, we know, uh-oh, something is up.

I like this scene because it took me so long to get it right. I probably had six completely different starts and ended up beginning the book as Autumn arrives on campus and the mystery begins to unfold. I originally began about 80 pages earlier before she had even heard of Dickensen Academy. I had wanted to tell the whole story but learned from my early readers that many of those early pages could simply be background material. However, it took me close to a year of cutting to finally get to the ideal starting point.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I’d love to hang out with Ben Coleman. I fell in love with him while writing the story. He is very intelligent and easy to talk to. We’d probably go on a long hike in the mountains.

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Definitely Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for about a thousand reasons.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

The only character based 100% off of real life is Zoey, Autumn’s Welsh terrier. Zoey is based off of the younger version of our late dog, Rylie.

Two characters are based partly off of real-life people. Autumn is a combination of myself and my daughter, and Aditi is based off of a good friend I met in my 20s. Everyone else is imagined.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

Books have always played an important part of my life, so over the years I began to fantasize writing one of my own. But it wasn’t until I had kids that I felt compelled to do so. I wanted them to fall in love with reading too, and I found that if they liked a book (or series), they would read like crazy, but if they didn’t care for it, they hated to read. That inspired me want to write books that would keep kids reading, so they would develop the love of reading for a lifetime.

NBTM Can Dreams Come True? by Krysten Lindsay Hager

Can Dreams Come True?
by Krysten Lindsay Hager

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   YA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
I felt disloyal sharing my problems with Zach with another guy, but in some weird way it was like no one got me like Andrew did. Even though we had only known each other for a little over twenty-four hours, it was as if I had known him for ages. Although I guess it made sense seeing as it always seemed like he understood what I was going through whenever I listened to his music.
I ended up pouring out the whole gross story about how insecure I felt about Tanna and how I didn’t want to seem jealous, but I didn’t feel comfortable with Zach hanging out with her.
“I know you’re probably thinking, well, obviously her first serious boyfriend, how insecure and jealous can she be?” I said wishing I hadn’t opened my mouth.
“Nope, not at all. In fact, I was thinking this crap is why I don’t date more. What is it with our generation being so casual about stuff? Again, people call me old-fashioned, but I don’t think you and I are wrong to expect people not to hang out with their exes anymore. And if I’m old-fashioned, then why are my songs about this exact thing so popular? I can’t be that out of touch if people are relating to the lyrics, right?”
“Yeah, I think a lot of people want commitment deep down,” I said. “Or maybe I’m wrong. Maybe guys just want to date as many girls as possible and not settle down.”
“The media says I come off as this wounded guy as an act to get more female fans.”
I bit my lip. I had heard those rumors, too. In fact, at my old school, people made fun of me for falling for his fake image and said I was too naïve to see he was a player.
“Why are people so cynical?” he asked. “There was this article about me called, ‘Vulnerable or Vulgar: Is Holiday for Real?’”
I had read the article five times and then went online to read the outtakes from it, but all I said to him was, “Oh?”
“Yeah,” he said. “The journalist who interviewed me had an edge to him. The whole time I could tell he didn’t like me, and I almost wanted to call him out on it. I gave short answers and he labeled me, ‘moody and reclusive.’ Actually, I’d like to be reclusive, but I can’t get enough time off to do it,” he said laughing. “Being a recluse is just a dream at this point.”
I giggled. “It’s annoying how people just make snap judgements about you and they can put it out there.”
“I know, right? And if I’m having a bad day because I don’t feel good, nobody writes, ‘He had a sore throat and doesn’t feel like talking.’ No, they make it sound like I was being stuck up when all I wanted to do was go to bed and not die from the flu.”
Interview with Krysten Lindsay Hager
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
One of my favorite parts is when Cecily is on the music video set and goes into a trailer and her pop star crush, Andrew Holiday comes in and they have a conversation where they see they have a lot in common. I love that the conversation isn’t some surface flirting, but instead they have a deep conversation and get to know each other. You can see a friendship (and maybe more) forming.
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I would like to spend the day with Andrew Holiday the singer/songwriter and see what his writing process is like. He’s very grounded for someone living his dream in the spotlight. I’d like to see how he got that way and how he manages to keep grounded with all the fame.
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
I’d love to have written The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It’s one of those books I can reread and find something new in each time.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
It’s really hard to base a character on a real person because people are so multidimensional. It’s so much easy to create your own characters.
5. What made you want to become a writer?
I used to like making up storylines for my dolls when I was a kid. I was very into soap operas, movies and books thought it’d be amazing to create stories people could escape with.
Blurb Blitz Eyes Behind Belligerence by K.P. Kollenborn
GENRE: Historical Fiction
Told in five parts, this novel unravels the challenges between two unlikely Nisei friends, Jim and Russell, into adulthood during the Second World War. As restrictions are imposed, (even in the safe, rural community of Bainbridge Island,) as harassments escalate, (including the F.B.I. invading their homes and deporting their fathers to Montana for espionage trials,) the fated day arrives: evacuation of all Japanese civilians. Rounded up like cattle, tagged, they are hauled to the fringes of Death Valley: Manzanar. Together they must survive racism, gang violence, and the harsh elements of the environment. Together they must prove their loyalty, especially after a tragic riot on the eve of Pearl Harbor's anniversary. While Russell enlists in a segregated army, becoming part of one the most decorated units in U.S. history, Jim is sent to a different camp for the "No-No" boys: those who are marked disloyal. Removed from their families, they are forced to reevaluate their identities and discover, most importantly, what it means to forgive.
Read an Excerpt:
Russell gawked at the barrack, appalled. No walls. No furniture. No kitchen. No radio. What kind of place was this? It looked like some sort of solitary confinement. He walked over to one of the cots and pressed down. It felt firm and rigid. No pillows. No mattresses. Everyone frowned; except the twins who were more interested in the stoves‘ bellies by swinging the doors. Gertrude slapped both their hands, and complained about their unruly behavior.
Meito removed his hat, brooding over their bad luck. He sold his twenty acre farm, not knowing if he could afford the taxes without income, in exchange for this? He left his house, his possessions, and his pride for an empty space in the middle of nowhere? If he had known it was going to be this disgusting he would had loaded his shot gun and fought like hell! But no. He packed his bags instead, feeling obligated to protect his family. He knew his actions would embarrass them by provoking the authorities, and possibly make things worse. A good citizen never defied leadership; even if the men in charge were terribly wrong.
Gertrude shrieked. She began to gag, her face turning red, pointing to George. In between his fingers George held the tail end of a scorpion. Meito flew to his son, dropping his hat. He instantly grabbed the scorpion and catapulted it out the door. Then he sprinted to the door to slam it shut.
“That was a big no-no!” he barked, his voice trembling. “That was a very dangerous creature! When you boys see it again, run away! Do you boys understand?”
Horrified, both nodded their heads, not fully comprehending why their father hollered at them. George started to sniffle. Gertrude went to him, draping her arms around her confused son. She rocked him back and forth, telling him that everything was alright, and that Daddy didn‘t mean to yell at him. That he was only protecting them.
“Let‘s see if we can get some sleep,” Meito wearily sighed. Turning to his mother, he spoke in Japanese, “Mama, do not worry. The sun will rise higher tomorrow.”
About the Author:
Currently I have three books published, two historical fiction and one children's book. Although I’ve been writing since childhood, I have a BA in History. I love studying history as much as wanting to evoke stories. I like to believe that after decades worth of introspection we have learned, hopefully more wisely if not conscientiously, what happened yesterday with a critical eye. Aside from a history degree, I also have a graphics art degree. My husband and I once owned a music store, a pizza delivery business, and several internet businesses. I also have dabbled with real estate and am grateful I got the heck out right before the crash! Sadly, history tends to repeat itself in important ways. Currently my family continues to live outside of Kansas City and will always have roots tied to Kansas. I am in the process of working on two more books, another historical fiction and one non-fiction.
Haunts
“Be off with you,” Harrtuck said. “Nothing but made-up rubbish.”
The woman gave a raspy laugh. “True for some, not for me. She flipped over one illustrated card and then another. “Chenne smiles on you,” she said, naming the warrior aspect of the goddess. “Success in battle will be yours,” she promised and turned another card. Her smile faded. “You will be hunted,” she said, giving Harrtuck a warning glance, “and powerful hands will turn against you.” One more card turned up. “Great favor awaits you.”
Harrtuck snorted. “Great favor? I’ll be happy for a tankard of ale and a warm trollop in my bed tonight,” he said, but he tossed a coin to the seer who caught it in her bony hands.
“How about you?” she said, giving Jonmarc a look as if she could see down to his bones. He took a step back and started to protest, but she was already flipping over cards.
The fortune-teller took a sharp breath. “You have been marked by fire and darkness,” she said. “So much loss for one so young.” She turned another card. “You will have great success in battle, and your skill will earn many coins.” Another card made her pause. “But it is the Dark Lady, not Chenne, who watches over you. Her hand is on you, but she is not a gentle mistress.” A final card turned at an angle showed a hangman, and the color drained from the seer’s face.
The Storm Within by Cerian Hebert
The Storm Within
by Cerian Hebert
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Contemporary Romance/Paranormal

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Healed from her own loss, Juliana Hopkins wants nothing more than to mend reclusive artist Aidan Byrne’s heart, and help close a chapter in his life that has haunted him for over twenty years. Risking their newfound love, Juliana is determined to release the ghosts he can’t let go.
Aidan has been in love with Juliana since the first moment he saw her, but if she can’t leave the tragedies of his past alone, he won’t be able to make a life with her.
She offers him a love he never dared to want, but loving her could rip open all the old wounds he’d never been able to heal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Two:

Besides the sound of the antique pendulum wall clock, the house was silent. Aidan sat on the sofa, fully dressed right down to his boots. He avoided meeting her gaze. She could see a storm brewing, from the way he stared at the floor, and the downturn of his lips, the tightness in his jaw.

As if he held on, by only a hair, to anger.

“You okay?” She wanted to go to him, but instinct kept her glued to her spot. Whatever stewed within him, she had a feeling it involved her. Her heart thudded in her chest. Whatever they’d discovered over the last few days she had the feeling was about to end.
Finally, he glanced up.

She wished he hadn’t. His blue eyes blazed with fury.

“You want to tell me what the hell you’re doing?” he demanded, his voice harsh with restrained anger.

It only took a quick glance at her desk to know exactly what he was referring to. The notes she’d taken about Rosemont Home sat next to her keyboard, where she’d left them.

She thought about playing dumb, telling him she had no clue what he meant, but he’d see right through it, and he didn’t deserve her lying to him about it.

She lifted her chin. Her lips trembled as she studied the anger on his face. Anger, like an immense, impenetrable wall.

“Why are you looking up information on Rosemont?” he asked, his tone stony.

Juliana grasped for the words to explain. “I thought maybe I could, um, find something out about your brother and sister.” How lame.       Like he didn’t believe he knew everything there was to know.

My Review: 5*
The Storm within is the 11th book in the Soul Mate Tree Series. Each book is written by a different Author and about different people places and things. All of the books however have one comment thread, The Soul mate Tree. This tree brings 2 soul mates together. The people may b e from different places, different times, lifestyles , and even different realms. All of the books are stand alones. I have read several of these books and so far have not fond one I didn't enjoy.

This particular book is about Juliana Hopkins and Aidan Byrne. Aiden has ghosts from hsi past chasing him and Juliana wants to help him put those ghosts to rest. Aiden loves Juliana but is afraid to open him self to his past and let her in. Their love is filled with a gambit of emotions and the Author actually makes you feel these as you read this book.
