For the Love of Laura Beth by Aubrey Wynne

For the Love of Laura Beth by Aubrey Wynne

The Korean War destroyed their plans, but the battle at home may shatter their hearts...
Laura Beth Walters fell in love with Joe McCall when she was six years old. Now she is counting the days until Joey graduates from college so they can marry and begin their life together. But the Korean War rips their neatly laid plans to shreds. Instead of a college fraternity, Joey joins a platoon. Laura Beth trades a traditional wedding for a quick trip to the courthouse.

The couple endure the hardship of separation, but the true battle is faced when Joey returns from the war. Their marriage is soon tested beyond endurance. Laura must find a way to accept the tragedy thrown in their path or lose the love that has kept them anchored for so long. With a determination that only comes from the heart, Joe relentlessly fights an invisible enemy...for the love of Laura Beth.

Praise for For the Love of Laura Beth

Warmth, compassion, heartache, faithfulness and more are emotions you will experience as you read this. I was completely immersed in this Korean War era tale, the historical details making the story come alive.

Aubrey Wynne did an awesome job with this Historical book. Thank you Aubrey Wynne for a very beautifully written story!!

An emotional read about the life, fears, and love during the Korean War! Aubrey Wynne begins each chapter with a thought-provoking quote. As a Midwesterner, who often visited Chicago in the 1950s, this romance includes well-researched historical details about Chicago, the era, and journalism. Aubrey Wynne blends history with a nicely paced full of family dynamics love story.

EXCERPT

Excerpt 2:

“Son, you’ve got some mail.”

The tone of his father’s voice sent a chill through Joey. He looked over his shoulder, straightened up, and smacked his head on the hood of the Crosley station wagon. Rubbing his scalp then wiping oily hands on his overalls, he took the envelope with an official-looking seal in the corner.

Joe held it as if it were poison.

“Do you want me to open it, son?”

He shook his head, the pulse beating rapidly in his neck. With trembling fingers, he tore at the paper. The words blurred as he sunk onto the bumper of the pickup. “It’s a conscription notice,” he whispered, looking into his father’s terrified eyes. “I’m being drafted.”

“It’s my fault.” Max let out a moan and lowered himself onto the bumper. “If I hadn’t spent your college tuition, you’d be in school right now.”

“It’s nobody’s fault, Pa. You served your time, and now it’s my turn.” He waved the letter in the air. “Maybe we’ll end up with matching limps.” It was a bad attempt at humor, and he wanted to take the words back as soon as they left his mouth. Unlike many of his friends, Joe did not have any romantic ideas about soldiering. His father had been straight up with him about the horrors of war.

“I just pray you come back, boy, and you don’t have to live through what I did.” The lines on his father’s face seemed to have deepened in the last five minutes. He swiped his palms at his eyes and squeezed Joe’s arm. “When do you go?”

“It says I report for my physical January 2 at ten o’clock.” Maybe he wouldn’t see active combat. He wasn’t chicken, but his father still screamed at night once in awhile. His mother had said they were night terrors left over from WWII. “I do have a skill, Pa. I’m sure they need mechanics.”

“That’s true, son. Maybe they’ll have you keep those jeeps running for the generals.” He forced a chuckle. “Go on and get out of here now. It’s Friday night and you’ve got a purty little gal to take to the movie.”

An awkward silence ensued as both men stared at the floor. Laura Beth. How would he tell her? It was bad enough they had to postpone their wedding, but now this? It was just plain bad luck. And they’d all had enough of that for one year. The thought of the tears welling up in those clear, blue eyes made his blood cold. She’d been their pillar these past months, and now he would break her heart.

“I’ll get cleaned up, I guess.” Joe headed to the door then stopped. Without turning around he said, “She’s really gonna flip, Pa. I think telling her might be as hard as going.”

In a thick voice, Max tried to offer some comfort. “The only thing worse than war was losing your mother, but Laura Beth is a strong young woman and loyal as they come. She won’t give up on you, and it wouldn’t be fair not to let her know right away. So go on now and get ‘er done.”

Resurrection: Sign of Six by Summer Lane

Resurrection: Sign of Six
Summer Lane
(Resurrection Series #3)
Publication date: December 7th 2018
Genres: Dystopian, New Adult

The third installment in the hit survival series, following the adventures of Cassidy Hart!

There are many words used to describe Cassidy Hart:

President. General. Sniper. Soldier.

Girl.

Now, just one word echoes through her head: Infected.

Cassidy Hart has been infected with a nanovirus that turns her own body against itself. As civil war with the technologically advanced Eastern Coalition and President Ayad begins to escalate, the need for more advanced weaponry and reinforcements arise.

When the United Kingdom makes Cassidy and the Western Republic an offer they can’t refuse, they board a plane to London to forge an alliance with the first known surviving European country they have truly communicated with since Omega’s defeat. Unknowingly, leaving their home turf may be more dangerous than they think…

Uriah True and Chris Young – two men whom Cassidy cares deeply for – will be pitted against each other in the most unimaginable way.

While Omega may be gone, loyalty to the cause remains. Yet a new, more dangerous enemy arises. An enemy who promises to reshape the known world. Omega was nothing. He will be everything.

Look for his sign. The sign of the sixth.

Heed his promise:

The end of the world was only the beginning. The worst is yet to come.

Even Cassidy Hart may not survive this time…or will she?

From Summer Lane, the #1 bestselling author of more than 20 hit books.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

EXCERPT:

I turn my back on Uriah, a man I love, but a man who is also more dangerously complicated than an armed IED. He doesn’t try to follow me. He knows better. In many ways, we are too much alike, and that makes our arguments predictable.

It also makes them repetitive.

I pull my jacket around my shoulders and I head to the trails that lead toward the glacier, away from the noise and activity of the base. I just need to be alone for a while. I need to clear my head. I am the president, and small arguments – even romantic relationships – cannot be allowed to distract me from my job.

I wander through the gravelly, dirt trails, the frigid temperatures pinching my cheeks, turning them red. I pick my way through slick shale and sparse shrubbery as I get closer to the glacier itself, blue and white and crusted with dirt. Truth be told, up close, the glacier looks like a sea of aged snow clumped in a massive pile, something that needs to melt into the landscape but never does.

I stop at the edge of the glacier, standing on an outcropping of rock. Here, away from the noise of the base, despite being protected inside its perimeters, I get a small semblance of silence and peace. The glacier rises up into the mountains that surround the base, stretching for thirteen long, frozen miles.

I sit on the rock and pull my knees to my chest, wondering what the nanobots are doing inside my body. I know that in Clare and Jay, deviating from their programmed directive would result in their immediate death. But what is my directive? What has Ayad programmed these bots to do? Are they going to kill me if I try and pick up a gun? Are they going to shut me down if I attempt to give a speech? As president of the Western Republic, there are a million everyday tasks that could result in my potential termination.

Am I supposed to pause everything until our doctors can figure out how to remove these things from my body? I press the palms of my hands against my forehead.

That’s exactly what Chris wants me to do. Press pause.

Hang back and wait until they figure this thing out.

So not my style. If patience if a virtue, then I’m the most non-virtuous person on this planet. I don’t want to sit around and wait for Ayad to kill me. If I’m going to die, I’ll die doing the same thing I’ve been doing every day since the Collapse: fighting.

Fighting for the simple freedom of taking a walk and admiring a glacier.

These are the things that will be taken from us if Ayad or the EC dominates the Western Republic in this already too-bloody Civil War. I cannot allow that. We already destroyed Omega and their strongholds across the globe during the Last Stand. Ayad may be clinging to shreds of Omega religion and loyalties, but that alone is not enough to resurrect their full might. He relies on deception, trickery, and propaganda to rally people to his cause.

A movement based on deception can be brought to its knees.

The only question is…how?

Excerpt:

Without closing my eyes, I slowly wrapped my mind around what the guy in black was. Monster. Supernatural. Something that wasn’t supposed to exist. But what exactly was he? Could he be a ghost? He could walk through walls. He could disappear.
What kind of ghost dresses like some kind of assassin and gets his jollies from causing campus lockdowns? It didn’t fit.
Plus, he was flesh and bone when I hit him with the knife. I thought about banshees, but banshees were female, weren’t they?

I thought about Japanese shinigami, escorts to the underworld—but no one had died.

"By
the way, how are you settling in? Still in love with the apartment?” he teases,
arching one eyebrow, his voice loaded with humor.
I make a face. “What exactly are you hinting
at?” I ask, and he lets out a laugh, his eyes bright with amusement. He puts
his hands in his pockets, and relaxes, slouching his shoulders a little. “Is
this your way of asking me if I’ve experienced any paranormal activity?” The
sound of his laughter stirs something in my chest, a happy feeling I haven’t
felt in so long. I don’t miss the looks I’m getting from the women he was
talking to. Also, I just can’t miss the opportunity to tease him in return.
“Oh, yeah.
I haven’t had a chance to tell you. There’s a ghost who visits me every night.
I haven't been getting much sleep but all in all…I can’t really complain,"
I tell him with a knowing look, and his face falls immediately.
He looks
pale, and I almost feel sorry I lied.
Almost.
“You’re
joking,” he tells me, jaw taut, a panicked look in his eyes.
“Not so
funny now, is it?” I quip and see him slowly regain the color that had gone
amiss from his cheeks. His eyes sparkle like emeralds as he recovers, and the
corner of his lips tilts into a grin that tells me he’ll make me pay for it.
I wouldn’t
be opposed to the idea, if it entails certain things.
He points a
finger at me and shakes his head in disbelief.
“That
wasn’t funny, Ines.”
“That was very funny and you know it.”
“Alright.
You got me. I’m going to stop teasing you now, okay?”
Oh, please don’t.
I shrug. “A
little teasing never hurt anybody, am I right?”
He nods
slowly, a small smile stretching across his face. His eyes linger on me, as if
trying to read me. I felt bold a moment ago, but now that he’s staring at me
with such intensity, I feel my cheeks redden and look down.
