Which was the hardest part of the book to write? The easiest?

The hardest part of Joy to You and Me (At Work!) was addressing those people who aren’t going to appreciate your joyful actions. We all know that one person at work who just isn’t going to be happy no matter what they or anyone else does. As most everyone realizes, you can’t control others, and you certainly can’t change them, either.

I wanted to help the reader with those individuals, but that one subject could have turned into a whole separate book! I shared some examples from my own life about encounters with difficult people, but I also found a great article online by Lolly Daskal, President and CEO of Lead from Within. Daskal talks about the six “As” to help deal with difficult co-workers: Accept, Anticipate, Adjust, Attune, Avoid (my favorite!) and Apply. I then recommended to not give up entirely on these individuals – they need kindness, too, maybe even more than happy people!

The easiest part to write was when I discussed how to bring joy to co-workers. My mission in life is to bring joy to others. I had a blast writing about the many ways I’ve brought joy to fellow employees and sharing examples from other people and companies who’ve done the same.

When you make a plan to bring joy to someone else at work, it’s like when you know you’ve bought the most PERFECT present ever for someone. The anticipation and excitement make me almost giddy! Seeing the look on their face and hearing their appreciation is wonderful. I truly believe if we all did this more often, every workplace would be lighter, happier, and more productive! Plus, bringing joy to others at work has a ripple effect that goes all the way to a company or organization’s customers as well.
