Virtual Tour The Mistress of Pennington's by Rachel Brimble

The Mistress of Pennington's
by Rachel Brimble

GENRE: Saga/Romance

Elizabeth Pennington should be the rightful heir of Bath's premier department store through her enterprising schemes and dogged hard work. Her father, Edward Pennington, believes his daughter lacks the business acumen to run his empire and is resolute a man will succeed him.

Determined to break from her father's iron-clad hold and prove she is worthy of inheriting the store, Elizabeth forms an unlikely alliance with ambitious and charismatic master glove-maker Joseph Carter. United they forge forward to bring Pennington's into a new decade, embracing woman's equality and progression whilst trying not to mix business and pleasure.

Can this dream team thwart Edward Pennington's plans for the store? Or will Edward prove himself an unshakeable force who will ultimately ruin both Elizabeth and Joseph?

Excerpt Two:
He moved to walk away, and she reached for his arm before she could think just how dangerous such contact could be. He halted, and even when he looked at her fingers clutched on his forearm, she did not remove them. It suddenly felt important she touch him; that he understood she had care for what he said or asked her.

Even though the physical contact set her heart racing, she held her grasp. ‘Why do you ask me about your family?’

He closed his eyes and dropped his chin to his chest.

Disquiet whispered through her. What had caused such uncharacteristic hesitation in him?

‘Joseph…’ She slid her hand from his arm, ignoring the pang of loss that the break of contact brought. ‘If there’s something bothering you, please, share it with me.’

He slowly raised his head, his blue eyes full of irritation once more. ‘I will, but not here. Not on the street. I’d prefer to come to your office tomorrow.’

How was she supposed to wait until tomorrow? Her curiosity was rife. It was clear something had changed between them. Something, it seemed, of which she was the cause.

She nodded. ‘I’ll send a message to you first thing in the morning.’

‘Thank you. Until then, I bid you good day.’

He walked away, leaving Elizabeth with questions and words flailing on her tongue. She stared after him, fearful of the pull deep in her chest that Joseph’s concerns had somehow become hers. No good could come of such caring. Her only goal should be proving her worth and capability in Pennington’s and beyond. She could not allow one man, any man, to have such an effect on her.

She inhaled a long breath and walked towards Pennington’s doors.

Interview with Rachel Brimble

1. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

It’s always a little of both! As a plotter, I start each book completing character sketches for my hero, heroine and villain, if I have one. The characters’ sketches usually provide the protagonists’ goals, motivations and conflicts. I then write a chapter plan where I write one or two paragraphs of what I want to happen in each chapter. That then makes it very easy to write a synopsis.
Having said that, I always trust my characters implicitly so if they take me on a course I hadn’t planned, I always run with it. Sometimes they know their story better than I ever could!

2. Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.

This book is very special to me and my first journey into the Edwardian era. I write contemporary mainstream romance, romantic suspense and, previously, Victorian romances. The Mistress of Pennington’s was a story I’ve believed in since I first started writing it – this book and the others that will follow all have the theme of Female Empowerment which is something close to my heart. With romance, suspense, intrigue and a little scandal, I’m confident readers will love the themes, failures and triumphs in The Mistress of Pennington’s as well as falling in love with the charismatic and pro-equal rights hero, Joseph Carter.

3. Have you written any other books that are not published?

I’m fortunate that every book I’ve written has been published – whether by a small press or a mainstream publisher. I am very proud to have had twenty-one novels and two novellas published since 2007, with two more novels coming in 2019.

4. Pen or type writer or computer?

Always computer – I use a laptop and love the freedom it gives me. I like to write in my home office during cold, windy or wet days…which is often living in the UK! But in the summer, I always write in the garden beneath a parasol with my chocolate Labrador, Tyler at my feet. Bliss!

5. Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

A HUGE thank you!! I have many readers who have read my books from the very first, Searching For Sophie to The Mistress of Pennington’s. It means the world to me that readers have taken this incredible journey with me and watched my stories grow and change and, of course, the writing itself.
My most popular series (so far!) is the Templeton Cove series (Harlequin Superromance) which I am so grateful for because I adore this fictional UK seaside town and its many residents.

Long may my readers follow me!
