Virtual Excerpt Tour for Courageous Cain by D.J. Davis

Courageous Cain
by D.J. Davis

GENRE: Romantic Suspense

Josie Shepherd loves running free, with no one and nothing to tie her down—until a new job at a kennel introduces her to both an unexpected friend and a vicious, abused dog named Cain.

When Josie stumbles upon the body of a murdered woman, she runs to Deputy Gordon Wolfe, a disfigured man hiding behind his badge. His shy smile and affection for dogs make her reconsider what she’s running from.

Now she’s on the run from a serial killer and her own heart. But when her friend is abducted and Cain appears to be the murder weapon, Josie’s attempt to save them both lands her in the killer’s lair. Josie’s strength and Cain’s loyalty are tested to the limit as they fight for their lives. Facing a killer is one thing, but facing her love for Gordon is Josie’s greatest challenge.

EXCERPTS (Exclusive Excerpt):

Barks and growls washed over me when I opened the door to the back kennels. Taking no chances, I used the pull ropes to move Cain. Once he was secured, I cleaned up after him and readied the kennel for his next move.

Cain’s attitude hadn’t improved any overnight. He flung himself against the gate. Ready, willing, and able to eat me alive. The kennels had been built for dogs like him— or so I hoped, considering there were no other dogs like him—and the gate held. I sat on the top step and watched, curious as to how long he would keep this up. Seeing I wasn’t going to run for my life, Cain launched a continuous stream of loud barks.

Fletcher sat beside me and I slung an arm around him as we watched the gigantic dog. Cain’s barks tapered off to occasional yaps bubbling out of him like hiccups. He sat on his haunches, gazing at us with amber-brown eyes bright with curiosity and intelligence.

“Cain,” I said, soft and low.

His Raggedy Andy ears perked up and he tilted his head to one side, studying me.

“I’m not going to hurt you, Cain.”

The dog’s massive head tilted from side to side as he listened. He tore at the gate and looked up to see if that was threatening enough to make me leave. When it didn’t work, he let out a disgusted snort and curled up on his bed. He barked the instant I got up, but he didn’t growl. After that, Cain growled at me only one more time, but by then I was caged and he was the one on the outside, looking in.
